Abbeymead Primary School

Reading Support in School

At Abbeymead it is our ambition that every child will make great progress to becoming a competent and skilful reader with a passion for reading.

We recognise the fundamental importance of reading. Reading is not just a basic skill, but a tool that opens up access to new ideas, knowledge, and perspectives. It is essential that our pupils are equipped with strong reading skills to enable them to thrive in their learning journeys and unlock their potential. We have put in place effective measures to help teachers identify pupils who may require additional support in early phonics and reading. This allows us to swiftly intervene and provide targeted support, ensuring that no child is left behind.

By prioritising reading in our curriculum and identifying pupils who need further support, we ensure that every student at Abbeymead Primary School has the opportunity to develop their reading skills and reach their full potential.

At Abbeymead School, we understand that for some children reading can be more challenging and they may require additional support with phonics and/or reading, however, we still maintain the same ambition for these children. What we aim to do is offer support, scaffolding and adaptation to meet the needs of all pupils enabling to become the best fluent and competent readers they can be.

Upon identifying a pupil who needs help with reading, we will work with the pupil and their family to identify the specific areas they require support with and ensure that support is available.

With the help of our experienced team and targeted approach to reading support, we aim to ensure that pupils at Abbeymead School can overcome any reading struggles and reach their full potential.

If you have any concerns about your child's reading we actively encourage you to contact their teacher for further advice and support.

There are many ways we offer support in school including: (this is not an exhaustive list)
