Abbeymead's Big Week of Reading

March 2023

At Abbeymead we recognise the importance of developing competent and passionate readers as part of our everyday practice. However, we also love to take the opportunity to promote and celebrate reading where ever we can. We therefore held our annual ‘Big Reading Week’ to coincide with World Book Day from February 27th through to Sunday 5th March.  The week included a wide range of activities, see below for more details:

The Big Book Swap: This has become a much favoured event at Abbeymead and one again more than a 1200 books were swapped and rehomed. Don’t forget that once you have read your new books you can bring them and swap them again for a book in our ‘Book Nook’.

Dress as word

Wow! What an effort you went to and what a range of vocabulary!  From fatigued to glamourious and from injured to creative there was a whole dictionary on display.

Competition Time

We had an incredible response to our decorate a toilet roll competition and we also had a record number of poetry submissions. The Reading Ambassadors did a great job with the judging prize winners were selected from across the school and presented with certificates in assembly. Take a look at some of the fantastic entries below

The Poetry Slam

Every year group learnt a poem off by heart that was then shared it with the rest of the school during our Poetry Slam assemblies. If you want to know what Poem your child has learnt see the list below and ask them to share it with you at home.

The Big stay and read

We hosted our 2nd and 3rd Sat and read sessions of the year this week with almost 200 family members attending Wednesday and Thursday. Can you spot yourself in the pictures on our stay and read page?

The sessions stared with some input from the reading team with strategies for supporting your child to read at home and at your request more strategies to support the development of a love for reading. We will host another visit in the summer and will again use your feedback to build the teacher led session. If you weren’t able to attend the presentations and resources can be found here.

March 2022

What a week we had!                                                                                                                                                                                                    Our big reading week saw a range of exciting and engaging activities taking place across the school. Below are just some of the highlights

Book Fair

The Book Fair was another success so, THANK YOU to everyone who purchased a book. We are now planning a trip down to their warehouse in  the Forest of Dean to choose over 130 free books that you have earned us in the past year.

 The Big Book swap

More than 1500 books were donated, swapped and rehomed as part of our big book swap. Once again, it was a huge hit with the children. Don’t forget you can swap books at any time using our great new Book Nook.

Dress a Potato

Wow, what a fantastic effort you all made with your potatoes. We had such a variety of potatoes and choosing the winner was incredibly tricky. A huge well done to everyone who create a story book potato, we had so much fun looking at them. The reading ambassadors chose the finalists and our 6 winners who will receive a book for their amazing efforts.

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day in a number of ways, including inviting children and staff to dress up as a word. We had such fun trying to guess what everyone had come dressed as.  Each class then choose their winning word and children were presented with certificates.
