All children are individuals and have their own unique talents and areas of difficulties. At Abbeymead Primary School, we recognise children’s individual gifts, abilities and weaknesses, which need to be adequately addressed by their class teacher.
We champion that “every teacher is a teacher of every child or young person including those with SEN” (Nasen, 2014) and, in line with the SEND Code of Practice 0 – 25 (2014) class teachers are responsible for the learning and progress of all children, by ensuring appropriate support and adjustments to make learning accessible for all pupils.
Our SENDCo, Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Teaching Assistants support teachers and pupils with additional provision and strategies to ensure all pupils make progress towards achieving their personal potential. This includes children who have significantly greater difficulty in learning, than the majority of children of the same age and those with a medical diagnosis or disability where any special provision needs to be made.
All children must have equal opportunity to take part in a broad and balanced curriculum and in all activities of the school. Where necessary, special arrangements may need to be made for those children with specific needs, e.g. hearing impairment, communication difficulties, physical disabilities, medical disabilities. Those who have additional needs will be encouraged to develop their strengths, take responsibility and be helped to become as independent as possible.

Providing early help to our children and families at Abbeymead Primary School means we are more effective in promoting support as soon as we can. Early help means providing support as soon as a problem emerges, at any point in a child’s life, from the foundation years through to teenage years.
The school follows a complaint procedure and this will be followed for any SEND complaints. If you have a query or complaint regarding your child and their special educational need please initially talk to the class teacher. This query will then be discussed and resolved or passed on to the SENDCo.
If you feel this issue has not been dealt with sufficiently or you still need further advice please inform the Head Teacher or governing body.
