Abbeymead Primary School

Ready for Life

Ready for Life

Realising potential, learning respect and taking responsibility.

Abbeymead has a mission statement which will guide future development. We believe that it is our role to teach the necessary skills that will enable our children to succeed in life. Realising potential is about ensuring that every child achieves their personal best in terms of English, maths and the rest of the curriculum. Learning respect highlights the impact of our behavioural programme, which teaches our children the value of understanding and respecting others. Taking responsibility addresses two key aims - our children are taught how to become effective and happy members of any community, and to ensure that they are taught strategies to become proactive and positive individuals.

School ethos and values

As directed under new Ofsted guidance, September 2014, we at Abbeymead Primary School take opportunities to actively promote British Values, defined by the government as the following:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Abbeymead Primary School we have interpreted these British Values in the following manner:

Actively promoting also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views. At Abbeymead, values of tolerance and respect permeate all areas of school life. This engenders a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure and facilitates the fulfilment of potential. Pupil voice plays an integral part in driving the school forward and school rules at different levels are seen as the foundation upon which this can be achieved.

The following are a selection of activities that are evidence of our commitment to British values.

  • We have an elected school council/ Learning Forum
  • A broad and balanced curriculum that teaches elements of democracy, civic responsibility, rules and laws, the monarchy, equality, values and virtues, environmental awareness and understanding of other faiths
  • Visitors from other faiths
  • Positive behaviour policy which encourages tolerance and mutual respect
  • Best of British topic week
