Abbeymead Primary School

Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural (SMSC) Development

At Abbeymead, we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides children with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. This is embedded throughout all aspects of school life. Our ‘Ready for Life’ awards allow families to continue this learning at home.

It is our intention to provide pupils with a range of exciting learning opportunities, both in and outside the classroom, with the support of our local community, which enable them to develop the attitudes and skills necessary for them to grow into responsible, happy and productive individuals and citizens.

Social and Emotional Learning

Our children are growing up in a world that provides many more challenges, as well as opportunities than ever before. As a school, we think it’s important that our children understand how to cope with the stresses and strains of modern day living. Our Personal, social, health and economic education extends across the whole-school, and provides pupils with a weekly opportunity to develop self-awareness, effective emotional balance and compassion towards others. Children have the opportunity to discuss and explore their feelings within these sessions using the ‘feelings wheel’, which is a consistent approach across the school.  Each child has a Reflection Book, which provides an opportunity to record their personal thoughts.

We resource much of this this with Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning resources.

Fundamental British Values

Promoting the traditional British Values at Abbeymead is very important to us. The Department for Education categorises British Values into five key areas:

  1. Democracy
  2. The rule of law
  3. Individual liberty
  4. Mutual respect
  5. Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Abbeymead Primary School you will encounter these values throughout our everyday school life and through our own ABC programme. In developing our curriculum, and planning provision, we ensure that the school’s ‘Ready for Life aspects’ are fully embedded in lessons; British Values play an important part in these.
