Abbeymead Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE) and Sports are an integral part of every child’s education and development. We aim to inspire the next generation by providing a wide range of sporting opportunities that cater for children of all abilities. We feel that all children should have access to quality PE provision, with the intention of increasing the amount of young people taking part in regular sporting activity throughout their lives.
Fun, enjoyment, confidence, competence and self esteem are the forefront of our PE delivery. Children in EYFS and KS1 develop the fundamental skills such as aiming and throwing, balance, co-ordination, control, and movement. In KS2 children are able to use these fundamental skills to develop their knowledge and understanding of invasion games such as football, netball, tag rugby and hockey. These skills are also transferable to striking and fielding games such as cricket and rounders, together with net games such as tennis.

P.E Knowledge and Skills Progression
Abbeymead PE Leaders
At Abbeymead we recognise the importance of developing not only the children’s physical capabilities but also their leadership skills.
Our P.E. leaders programme provides our children with the opportunity to work alongside coaches, teachers and peers to learn strong leadership skills.
The PE leaders are responsible for:
- Organising, sorting and ensuring PE equipment is tidy in the PE cupboard.
- Running/helping run activities at lunch/after school
- Helping to organise events
- Collecting/returning class PE equipment
- Assisting the class teacher in PE
- Taking part in leadership training to gain qualifications
Each year, we look at the global sporting events taking place and identify Ambassadors to learn about the event, share with the wider community and raise the profile of PE across the school.
Football World Cup Ambassadors 2022-2023
A group of children this year have taken on the role of Football World Cup Ambassadors, raising the awareness of the men's and women's events, across the year. At the beginning of the year the children ran an assembly about the men's event and oragnised a whole school sweep stake and lunchtime inter house football competitions. Most recently we had a visit from Forest Green Rovers to talk to the whole school about the unique club and its commitment to sustainability and healthy living.
Wellbeing and Healthy Living Ambassadors
We have recruited children from across the school who will working closely with the PE lead to raise the profile and importance of active lifestyles and its link to personal wellbeing.

Commonwealth Games Ambassadors 2021-2022
A group of our Year 5 children took on the role of 'Commonwealth Games Ambassadors'. Their role was to learn about The Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Games and to then share their knowledge with the rest of the school. They went on to organise a whole school Commonwealth Games in line with the actual event. Their hard work was recognised by the Rotary Club and as a result they were invited to join them for lunch and present their ideas to the club. The Rotary Club were so impressed they went on to win tickets to the actual Commonwealth Games.
International Women's Day - Girl's Football Event
Our Y5/6 Girl's Football team, braved the snow and took out some Y3/4 girls during lunchtime to practice some football skills.
School Football Team
South West Regional Finals; with teams from Plymouth, Bournemouth, Southampton and Reading among others competing to represent the South West in a forthcoming national final.
Abbeymead represented Gloucestershire and managed to finish an impressive 3rd in the group, 1 goal away from the semi- final. The group played 4 games winning the first 2, equalising with the last kick of the game in the third and an unfortunate loss in the last game. However, Mr Pass described the group as "showing true Meader Spirit" working hard for each other to get results. The attitude and behaviour of pupils was exemplary, and both Mr Butler and Mr Pass couldn't be prouder of them.

Indicator 1 - engagement of all pupils in physical activity
In addition to PE lessons, we run a number of initiatives to encourage all of our children to be engaged in regular physical activity.
Our PE Leaders have a broad range of roles but one of the most important is supporting active play times. Our leaders organise activities during the play times to ensure the children are active, happy and safe.
Active Travel Initiatives - each year we run a number of active travel initiatives.
Cycle September Initiative - as a school, pupils, teachers and parents took part in the Cycle September Initiative.

Our Ambassador Programme
Each year we identify PE leaders and sports ambassadors to raise the profile of sport across the school.
I2021/2022 Commonwealth Games Ambassadors.

2022/23 Wellbeing and Healthy Living Ambassadors from across the school who will working closly with the PE lead to raise the profile and importance of active lifestyles and its link to personal wellbeing.

Indicator 3: Increased knowledge, skills and confidence of staff
Sports Development Coach
Mr Butler is our Sport Development Coach at school. Throughout the year, he works alongside teachers to plan, support and deliver enriching lessons to enhance our pupil’s knowledge and skills. In addition to this, Mr Butler offers a range of clubs throughout the year to meet the needs of all our pupils here at Abbeymead.
We have recently purchased the license to use GET SET PE as our school PE scheme of work. Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.
Indicator 4 - Broader range of sports and activities
Bi annual - Year 5/6 Climb a mountain challenge!
Swimming Lessons - We have a large number of non-swimmers at Abbeymead, primarily due a lack of opportunity during the COVID years. For this reason, we have begun to enhance our swimming provision across the school; offering it to three year groups each year in hope that by the time our children leave the school, they can all swim and perform lifesaving techniques.

Indicator 5 - Increased participation in competitive sports
Throughout school we have many sporting teams who are doing well in their respective fields. We have worked very hard to increase the number of sporting clubs on offer by internal and external agencies to support the children's involvement in clubs.
Regular competitions include:

- Swimming Panathlon
- Indoor Panathlon
- B-Team football festival

Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) at Abbeymead
Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) is an approach to learning in which direct experience is of paramount importance. This strand of PE embraces activities and experiences that:
- Normally take place outside.
- Frequently have an adventurous, challenging, residential or skill building component.
- Often involve physical activity.
- Always respect the environment.
The term OAA is used because there is an essential need for adventure and challenge in the education of young people. In addition, when children participate in OAA they will be consolidating other areas of PE such as developing motor skills, confidence and competence in the outdoor environment, as well as undertaking both mental and physical challenges. These may or may not be of a competitive nature. Most importantly, they will also be learning the principles of safety relevant to each activity.
At Abbeymead, we aim to deliver high quality OAA within our school buildings and grounds and we are increasingly looking to take this out into our local environment. Both indoor and outdoor spaces can be used to introduce and develop orienteering, team building, exploring, bouldering and traversing skills.
Recently, we have invested in a Cross Curricular Orienteering scheme of work, which provides our children with fun, informative and progressive experiences. We have also installed a traversing wall to enhance OAA provision in our setting, as well as using our existing adventurous play equipment to plan and develop more challenging activities.
How can I support my child’s with P.E?
At home, there are several different ways you can support your child to ensure they have a healthy lifestyle.
Start to work towards the school's Be Active and Healthy Award. The awards encourage our children to take part in a range of sporting activities and to develop a healthier lifestyle.
Join a local sports club - There are a variety of different sports clubs in and around Gloucestershire that your child could attend. Some clubs offer different age ranges so that your child carries out the activities with children of a similar age.
Do something together - You can stay active and healthy as a family by undertaking different activities. These do not have to cost any money. Go for a walk around your local area, maybe even take a ball to throw or kick around. Get out on your bikes/scooters and go for a ride together. In addition to this, you can sign up for free events such as ‘Park Run’ (they have both adult and junior runs).
A balanced diet - A Balanced diet is just as important as exercise. Explore different recipes and cook healthy, balanced meals together as a family. You can also make meals fun. Use your artistic skills to turn your plate of food into a piece of art.

Comic Kids Yoga – This is a great way to get your children into Yoga. Yoga build can build core and muscle strength as well as flexibility. There are also some good resources for mindfulness and wellbeing too.
Joe Wicks – Joe Wicks has become a very popular way to work out at home for both adults and children. He has recorded videos for children and adults of all ability. On other social media sources, he provides healthy meal ideas.
Change4Life – Change4Life has been set up by the NHS to support families with having healthy lifestyles. There are many different ideas to help support you, such as different physical activities and recipes. An App is available to download.
